Root Cause 1

$2,000.00

A chloropleth map illustrating the first real estate transactions in Chicago. The checkerboard pattern of development in the city’s southwest corridor reflects Federal intervention, as half of the plots on the checkerboard were sold in the 1830s. The Federal government held on to the other half of the checkerboard to sell in the 1850s. This delayed development in the city’s southwest corridor and ignited development on the north and pockets of the south side. This pattern of unequal development, baked into the inception of the city of Chicago, still continues tot his day and represents an under-appreciated root cause of neighborhood inequality.
